Harold Johnson, known to friends as “Hal” or “Doc”, passed to be with the Lord on August 1, 2020, at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 16th, 1941, to Dr. Harold F. and Rose (Hove) Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dianne, son Jeff (Kari), daughters Janan Moser (Rob) and Joleen Newman (Jayson). He cherished his grandchildren Tyler and Drew Johnson, Madison and Michael Moser, and Kendal, Kinsey, and Kaycee Newman. Hal is also survived by his sister Jean Torgerson and numerous nieces and nephews.

A native of Northwood, IA, Hal graduated from Northwood High school in 1959 where he was a multi-sport athlete. He then attended the University of Iowa, graduating with BS and DDS degrees. He practiced dentistry for 25 years in Northwood and enjoyed a second career as a Financial Advisor until his death.

Hal loved watching and encouraging his children and grandchildren in multiple sports and activities as demonstrated by his odometer readings. He rooted hard for the Hawkeyes and loved golf as evidenced by his multiple club championships and course record score of 29 at Northwood Country Club.

He was extremely active in the community, including multiple board roles serving education, healthcare, charity, and his church. He loyally served his country in Vietnam as a member of the Navy assigned to the Marines, and loved sharing stories of his military experiences with his family.

Hal’s biggest impact and passion was his love for his wife, Dianne, and their family. He was protector, provider, teacher, encourager, and role model for many, and his impact will last for generations. His sense of humor, funny sayings, and nicknames he gave to so many produced a lot of laughs.

A visitation celebrating Hal’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 5 from 4:00 until 7:00 at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home –1211 10th St S, Northwood, IA. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 6 at Sunset Rest cemetery – 103 5th Ave N, Northwood, IA, and will be officiated by his pastoral friend Reverend Solveig A. H. Zamzow. You are welcome to bring a chair for the service on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Hal can be made to MercyOne North Iowa Cancer Center – 1000 4th St SW, Mason City, IA 50401 or Manna of Worth County (food bank) – 94 9th St N, Northwood, IA 50459.
